Walking is the preferred method to get to these beaches. From tinker knob to squaw valley via the granite chief trail is an additional 6 1 miles. Make sure you allow plenty of time to hike this trail. Also the use trail up the northeast shoulder of tinker knob starts about 150 feet north and out of sight of the sign.

This scenic 1 4 mile loop is located on the peninsula and takes visitors past fringing salt marshes cattail marshes mixed deciduous forest mudflats shrublands and rocky shores. The trail begins where granite point road turns into timber point road. There are no lifeguards on duty. Refuge staff will work to build a public trail this summer and a small portion of the trail is open to foot traffic from sunrise to sunset.

It winds next to the little river. The trail begins as a cart atv path that goes by a cabin and some private property and then starts along the rocky coast. Traveling to timber point is half the adventure. At the t hang a left before taking your first right on granite point rd.

There s lots of space for hikers to park. When hiking south on the pct there s a sign that says ecological research area on a tree at the trail junction between the pct and the disused trail. Just retrace your steps back to the parking lot to end your day on the mountain. Located off granite point road this is a minimally difficult trail that is approximately 1 2 mile long one way.

Timber point is a 97 acre peninsula with a 13 acre timber island that borders the little river estuary and the atlantic ocean. It was sunny and a little hot when we embarked on the trail. This island can only be reached and returned from at low tide. Stay on granite point road until you reach the end.

After a successful fundraising project this area has been included in the little river division of the rachel carson national wildlife refuge. You can wander off trail and poke through tidal pools and rocks and if you ve timed your hike right you can walk across to timber island. Tinkers point path picks up where the beaches path leaves off in mobile. At the far end of granite point road lies timber point and timber point island.

Our plan was to walk to tors cove and back via the tinkers point path for a round trip distance of 10 2 km. This is a wonderful walk just under 8 miles one way by a little beach and then along the little river to the ocean s edge where you have views of goose rocks beach and the 13 acre timber island. Another 9 and you will be looking down into catawba valley from tinker cliffs. From us 1 north take west st.

6 hours will give you enough time to pace yourself take pictures and eat lunch at the cliffs. The trail starts at a turnaround in mobile just past the high school. For those wishing to continue the hike past tinker knob the trail starts to rise and fall a bit more especially at the end where the granite chief trail drops over 1 900 in just 3 2 miles. Enjoy driving the mile and a half to the trailhead entrance with the beautiful atlantic ocean mere yards from you.
